Esarhaddon watched the battle around him. The Imperial advance was implacable, and through sheer numbers they were beginning to take the city. Fires raged out of control, and from his risen vantage point on the enormous altar his Legion had constructed months previous, he watched the Chaos forces slowly retreat into the heart of the city. One hundred feet wide and shaped as a great star of the Pantheon, the altar’s black surface shone with the reflections of ordinance and bolter fire as it was poured into the advancing Loyalists.

Here, the Imperials would be met by the fiercest defense as his own forces poured from buildings and hidden tunnels to meet them. Here, the leader of their forces would attempt to end the battle, slaying the serpent by cutting off its head. And it was here, Esarhaddon though, that the hero Atrus would be ensnared in the trap that the Sicarii Lord had so carefully laid.

The Great Powers would at once rejoice and recoil in horror.

Their triumph and defeat would be as one.

From the blood of a martyr would man’s black savior rise.

A god would once more walk amongst men.
